Before our July chemo appointment, we had emailed our doctor and nurse with a list of questions including asking about switching Kendall over to a port (instead of the central line that she has now) and if we could go on vacation with Brett's family in August! We were really surprised when they said that not only could we switch, but that they suggested we take out her central line before we left, and then wait until after her trip to put the port in. That meant we would have a few weeks "free" - meaning we wouldn't have to worry so much about germs on our trip, we wouldn't have to go to the ER if she got a fever, and we could skip getting labs while we were gone.
Kendall did great getting her line out, and we had a great time on vacation! It was so nice to not have to worry so much! After our trip, we went in for the Port placement surgery - we had to spend the night, but it overall went pretty well.
Unfortunately, we had some issues with them using things on her dressing that she was allergic to, while she was in surgery - but rather than switching her dressing out, we decided to wait and luckily she didn't break out or get a fever. Then when it was time to do chemo, we had a little argument with the nurse about whether or not they were going to use the cleaning agent that she's allergic to, but after I got her doctor involved, things went fine.
A few days before she was scheduled for chemo in September, Kendall got another fever! Luckily we were able to go to clinic instead of going to the ER, since Kendall had never had her port accessed before - I didn't want her first time to be in the ER with doctors and nurses she didn't know. She did great with the whole thing, and I think it must've just been a little bug because the fever was gone the next day and we were able to do chemo as planned, which was completely uneventful, as was October.
The only hiccup we had in October was a poor result on her hearing test - but they said that her ear was filled with wax. We went in a couple weeks later to have the wax cleaned out, and then she did great on the repeat text!
In November, as soon as chemo started Kendall started crying and saying that her belly hurt. We stopped everything, and waiting a few minutes, but then when we starting things up again, everything seemed to be fine so we figured it was just a fluke.
